KULT pres. Derrick May

About

DETROIT ORIGINATOR. KULT SEASON V. DERRICK MAY — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 On Friday, October 16th, KULT welcomes one of the founding figures of techno. Derrick May steps behind our decks for a night that connects the origins of an entire movement with the energy of Belgrade. Alongside Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, May formed the legendary Belleville Three — the Detroit pioneers whose ideas helped change the course of electronic music. His recordings as Rhythim Is Rhythim, including “Strings of Life” and “It Is What It Is”, gave that new sound an unmistakable emotional force, reaching dancefloors far beyond the city where it began. Through Transmat, he helped shape the next generation, releasing music from artists including Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen and Kenny Larkin. His influence runs through decades of club culture. Behind the decks, that spirit takes on a physical form: percussive intensity, unexpected shifts, deep musicality and the soul at the heart of Detroit techno. May’s instinct for tension and release makes the connection with the room central to every set. For KULT, this is a defining moment in Season V. Our transformed space welcomes an artist whose music helped lay the foundations for the culture we share — a rare opportunity to experience that legacy at close range, surrounded by people who come to feel every record. Detroit’s history. Belgrade’s energy. One dancefloor. October 16. Derrick May at KULT. Be in the room.
