THIS TOWN AIN'T BIG ENOUGH FOR THE TWO OF US... Hometown Sound System and Mighty Oak Sound System meet at The Art School for a respectful but competitive soundclash — Glasgow versus Edinburgh, two sounds bringing their own systems, selections and style to the dance. Mighty Oak Sound System have been an important part of Scotland’s sound system landscape for more than two decades. Based in Edinburgh and built around the partnership of Ben and Jofis, the sound has travelled extensively in the UK and internationally, carrying its distinctive roots and dub approach to dances and festivals across Europe and beyond. Alongside the sound system, Mighty Oak Records has provided an outlet for their own productions and collaborations, with a catalogue grounded in roots reggae, dub and soundsystem music. For the clash they’re joined on mic by long-time collaborator Ista Lion. Representing Glasgow, Hometown Sound System have spent the last decade building their own corner of Scottish sound system culture — running dances across the city, touring the system around Scotland and developing a broad musical identity stretching from roots and foundation through dub, dancehall and into contemporary UK bass music. For this one Hometown are joined by legendary UK reggae drummer and soundsystem veteran Horseman on mic. Both sounds bring their own boxes to The Art School and go tune for tune across the night, drawing for records, specials and dubplates in the tradition of soundclash. There’s plenty of history and mutual respect between the two camps — but, in the spirit of the old western… this town ain’t big enough for the two of us.
