About
Very few, if any, come as sharp behind the decks as Marcellus Pittman. A bonafide club heavyweight, the Motor City maverick takes no prisoners when it comes to vitalizing the dance floor. If you’ve witnessed him before, you get the sentiment. A master of the craft - infectious, meticulous mixing - twisting the templates of raw machine music traditions with his signature flair and groove. He understands music and exactly how to manipulate it. Rolling, low flung house and hi-tempo disco the trademark, yet not afraid to knock you around with hard slapping techno, obscure post-punk or change gears altogether with the quiet storm - a justified confidence knowing exactly when to bring you in on his versatile, captivating journey. Marcellus Pittman is a cornerstone of contemporary Detroit dance music. From the city that has both defined a distinctly deep, raw and human style of groove, and protected that approach with a proud defiance to impure and glossy trends - Pittman is an archetype of a beloved tradition. He generates that inexplicable warmth unlike anything you can get anywhere else. A DJ with all the range and know-how to make you move with feeling. First coming to prominence on Essential Selections Volume 1 with Theo Parrish on his Sound Signature label, Marcellus would swiftly become another quarter of the towering Three Chairs alongside Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jr. (Moodymann), and Rick Wilhite. Soon thereafter his own bespoke Unirhythm imprint was formed. A string of self-releases along with productions on Omar S’ FXHE throughout the early 00’s would quickly stamp his mark as an original producer with all the subtle mechanics to grip you. Pittman’s understanding of groove is crafty. He births raw as you like drum patterns and layers them up with weird and wonderful sonic details. His repertoire is full of gritty, lo-fi and spacious classics that don’t leave record bags the world over. Never resting, Pittman has plenty of other ventures on the go; outside of Three Chairs, he’s collaborated with Parrish and Omar-S as the T.O.M. Project and is part of the sprawling Rotating Assembly collective. While his native Detroit will forever be home - Marcellus is ubiquitous on annual club calendars across the globe. Whether in a sweaty basement or on the world’s biggest stages - from Paris to Tokyo, Berlin to Melbourne - he leaves a deep imprint. The beats and nuances of sound are firmly etched in all that Marcellus is. To put it simply - Marcellus Pittman brings love and joy to any space he enters - a gift of a genius.
