About

Seasoning presents an exclusive extended set from Peverelist and Pinch, bringing two of Bristol’s defining sonic shapeshifters together on The Old Blue Last soundsystem. For more than twenty years, their work has helped shape the movement of UK soundsystem music through dubstep, dub techno, post-dubstep, broken techno and the rhythmic territory beyond. Their paths emerged from the same city and period, but developed through distinct sensibilities. Pinch founded Bristol’s early dubstep night Context before establishing Subloaded and Tectonic, creating vital spaces for the music as it began to take physical form outside London. His productions have consistently drawn together dub’s depth and spatial imagination with the tension, weight and precision of techno. Peverelist came through the community surrounding Rooted Records, founding Punch Drunk to document the singular music developing across Bristol before carrying its ideas forward through Livity Sound. His records and DJ sets favour flow over easy resolution, moving through syncopation, repetition, negative space and psychedelic low-end pressure. Across Tectonic, Punch Drunk and Livity Sound, the pair have supported generations of producers while resisting the moment when a musical language settles into formula. Their extended set offers space to hear those histories as a continuous, evolving practice: dubstep and techno, jungle and garage, submerged electronics, broken rhythms and new sounds that remain difficult to name. Seasoning family YouYou opens the room, setting the foundations for the night through bass, electro, techno and exploratory club music. Before the dance begins, music journalist Lauren Martin will host a discussion and audience Q&A around her new book, Aftershock: The Seismic Impact of Dubstep. Built from extensive original interviews, the book traces the people, places and relationships through which dubstep developed. The conversation begins at 9pm, offering a deeper context for the music that follows without turning the night into a retrospective. This is a chance to hear two artists who helped build the foundations of Bristol’s soundsystem culture play with the freedom and duration their music deserves, inside one of London’s most intimate rooms. Peverelist & Pinch: extended set YouYou Aftershock book discussion and Q&A with Lauren Martin Friday 4 September The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch Discussion from 9pm Music from 10pm until 3am Rave Culture Is Folk Culture.
